The AJ Bell Great Bristol Run isn’t just any old race – it’s the best in the South West, and we’re so here for it. Established in 1989, this epic event has plenty of history. Plus its canalside course, unbeatable atmosphere and local support sets it apart from the competition.
Whether you’re signed up for the energy-packed 10K, the scenic half marathon or one of our Junior and Mini races, you’re in for something special.
Bristol, we love you – read our Bristol runner’s guide below to find out a few reasons why.
Why we love Bristol (and you will too)
What links Clifton Suspension Bridge, Banksy and Wallace and Gromit? Well, you’ll find them all – and plenty more – in brilliant Bristol, one of Britain’s liveliest and most creative cities.
Bristol blends a sense of history with modern cool, and boasts stunning waterside views, vibrant street art and plenty of green space. From cobbled streets to peaceful parks, there’s something for every runner – guaranteed.
And if you’re heading to Bristol for a Great Run event? You’re in for a treat: expect bohemian vibes, a pumping playlist and a crowd that’ll keep your legs pumping all the way to the finish line.
Must-Run Routes
Harbourside Loop. Hit all the Bristol highlights with this harbourside loop. Start at Queen Square, cross Pero’s Bridge to Millennium Square and head west along the canal. Pass SS Great Britain and Underfall Yard before taking the swinging bridge to Spike Island. Run along the River Avon path past Wapping Wharf and the M Shed museum back to the start.
Clifton Downs. Do a 5k loop of the perimeter or explore paths and hills to make up your own super-scenic route. Panoramic views of the Avon Valley and the Clifton Suspension Bridge thrown in for free.
Ashton Court Estate. Just a short drive from Bristol city centre, Ashton Court is a favourite with local runners. With 850 acres of ancient woodland, grassy banks and parkland, keep your eyes peeled for deer and stunning views. Discover your own routes or come for the regular Parkrun at the weekend.
Find your (running) tribe
Bristol’s running scene is as diverse and vibrant as the city itself. From traditional race-focused running clubs to casual social run crews, there are options for every pace and personality.
Not sure where to start? Classic athletics groups include Bristol and West AC. Town and Country Harriers love a good trail run, whereas Great Western Runners pride themselves on inclusivity. For women-only running, check out groups like Sole Sisters and This Woman Runs. Plenty offer free trial sessions and welcome runners of all levels. Find more info here.
When in Bristol…
Brunch and coffee goals. Hart’s Bakery in Temple Meads is perfect if you need to grab-and-go – and their pastries are to die for. And loved by carnivores, veggies and vegans alike, The Bristolian in Montpelier is home to one of the city’s best breakfasts. And if you’ve got a hankering for pancakes, there’s good news: the Harbourside’s Mud Dock Café serves brunch till 3pm.
Treat yourself. Bristol runners, you are spoilt. There’s Moti Running on Whiteladies Road and Up & Running Bristol on North View. Both offer expert advice, friendly service and a great selection of gear, from trainers to hydration packs.
Fun and free. A trip to Bristol isn’t complete without a street art tour: plan your route in advance using this free map and get ready to be inspired. You’ll find murals by Banksy and more in Stokes Croft, Nelson Street, Cumberland Basin and Montpelier. The Harbourside and Clifton Suspension Bridge never get old, either.
